About Lynn
About Me as a Teacher
I am an experienced educational professional with significant field experience in leadership, business management and marketing. Management and administration are both challenging and rewarding, but teaching and mentoring are what I enjoy and, consequently, what I do best. My experience continues to shape my educational philosophy and my methods.
The majority of my 40-year career has been in the classroom (mostly as a business professor at the tertiary level), I started out as a primary school teacher. I understand the importance of a solid early education. I also understand pedagogy and I have kept abreast of educational research and methodology throughout my career. However, in addition to that about 45% of my career was spent outside the classroom in real management and marketing positions. This has given me a wider perspective and a deeper practical understanding of the topics covered in my classes.
I have learned to value the contributions of other cultures and the widely differing points of view they sometimes bring to the table. I spent 18 years as a manager and educator in international settings. Dealing with multiple cultures and foreign governments during this time has helped me understand the issues, moral dilemmas, and practical dynamics involved in the current trend towards greater globalization and the economic/political/technological forces driving it.
From 2008 to 2017 I was the National Director of an NGO in Africa. Our work was mostly in severely disadvantaged or dysfunctional communities where governance has failed to serve the people adequately. While there were many frustrations, this experience has clarified for me the supreme importance of good education. By this, I mean education that provides a strong base in the disciplines of communication, history, science, and mathematics. But that is not enough. Effective education enables and motivates students to think and act independently to achieve desirable goals. It empowers them to be productive citizens, creative entrepreneurs, and thoughtful leaders who have an awareness of their overall purpose and responsibility to serve. My experience has taught me that schools and educators who do not strive for this sort of development in students fail to properly serve their mission. If leaders in the communities where we worked had been able to enjoy that sort of education, they likely would have had no need for our help. The development of people in this way is what every community or society needs.
So, this is the kind of educational experience I strive to provide for every student with whom I have the privilege to work.

My Philosophy of Education
My students’ successes are also mine. I do not see myself so much as an authority or expert with all the answers. Rather, I facilitate, coach, advise and inspire students to reach their highest potential.
My goal is to help students acquire and sharpen the tools necessary for understanding, objective decision-making, and action. This requires an ability to examine different points of view, effectively evaluate them, form practical plans, and execute them.
My experience has clarified for me the supreme importance of good education. By this, I mean education that provides a strong base in the disciplines of communication, history, science, and mathematics. But that is not enough. Effective education both enables and motivates students to think and act independently; empowering them to be productive citizens, creative entrepreneurs, and thoughtful citizens aware of their overall purpose and their responsibility to serve society.
Every human being possesses the potential for creativity, individuality, and the power to think and act thoughtfully. It is the work of true education to develop this power, to produce students who think for themselves and who do not simply reflect the thoughts of others. Instead of intellectual weaklings, true education produces individuals strong to both think AND act. Such are masters and not slaves of circumstances. They possess a breadth of mind, clearness of thought, and the courage necessary to preserve the integrity of their convictions.
