About Jake

One of the most important things about myself is that I like to talk and connect with people. I believe that my life has led me across the globe for a reason— so that I can better understand people from different walks of life, and therefore be a more effective teacher. I value a good conversation, and I am confident that those who choose me as their tutor will not be bored during their lessons, and will feel confident and energized regarding their language journey.

I am also a student! I plan to live in a Spanish-speaking country in the future, and I spend a lot of time in Central America, so I am constantly working to improve my Spanish speaking, comprehension, writing, and reading. I am also a beginner-level (A2) German student!

My formal background includes a Bachelor’s in Geography with a Minor in Spanish from the University of Colorado-Boulder. After University I worked for over 2 years at a digital imagery reseller, doing GIS and marketing, often interacting with Latin American clients fully in Spanish and translating technical newsletters. Since then I have worked as an Auxiliary English Teacher teaching ESL in a secondary school in Spain, as well as in tech sales, hospitality, and the public sector (as a Park Ranger!). Most recently I have completed a 120-hr TEFL/TESOL course and now possess a Certificate that is ACCREDITAT approved.

- My general approach: YOU tell me about yourself and your goals, and we tailor a lesson plan based on your needs and timeline
- Whether it’s learning the basics, or practicing advanced conversational English, we create a lesson plan that is exciting and interesting for you; this could be primarily a Task-based Learning approach, or Teach-Test-Teach, or whichever style matches your learning type the best (visual, auditory, verbal, kinesthetic)
- I provide guidance on how best you can leverage AI to advance your learning
- I am advanced proficient in Spanish (B2+) and have a Minor in Spanish from the University of Colorado-Boulder, plus have spent time living and teaching ESL in Spain
- I have spent time in many different industries; tech sales, hospitality, public service — so I can leverage my experience to help you gain the speaking abilities you need to advance your career
- Basic lessons aimed at ages 10-18, advanced conversational options for ages 18+
