About Zayan

My name is Zayan, and I thrive on both academic rigor and physical challenge. I am a dedicated South Asian student who excels in math and is currently pursuing an engineering degree. I love the strategic intensity of rugby and the logic of problem-solving. Known as a fast learner and someone who is genuinely good at explaining complex ideas, I find great fulfillment in helping people succeed in their school work. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the moment a student I teach truly understands a difficult mathematical concept.

My Approach and MethodologyMy teaching methodology centers on conceptual understanding over rote memorization. I employ the "I Do, We Do, You Do" model, beginning with explicit instruction and guided examples, transitioning to collaborative problem-solving, and concluding with independent practice. A key technique is connecting mathematical concepts to real-world applications to answer the inevitable "When will I ever use this?" question. I also use visual aids extensively—like graphing software (e.g., Desmos) to demonstrate transformations—and encourage students to articulate their reasoning verbally.A Typical Lesson PlanA typical 60-minute lesson for Grade 11 Functions (e.g., inverse functions) would look like this:Warm-up (5 min): Review of prerequisites (e.g., domain and range, one-to-one property).Introduction/Concept (15 min): Explicit instruction on the definition of an inverse function and its geometric property (reflection over the line y axis, using visual graphs. Guided Practice (20 min): "We Do" - Working through two examples together: finding the inverse algebraically and sketching the graph, prompting student input at each step .Independent Practice (15 min): "You Do" - Students work on two similar problems while I circulate to provide targeted feedback and address common errors. Wrap-up/Exit Ticket (5 min): Quick check for understanding or a preview of the next topic. What Sets Me Apart What sets me apart is my ability to foster a growth mindset and create a low-stress environment where making mistakes is viewed as a necessary step in the learning process. I customize my pace and examples to the student's learning style—whether they are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. I am highly proficient in breaking down complex topics into digestible steps, which builds student confidence and self-efficacy. Who the Lessons Are For The lessons are designed for high school students, specifically those in Grade 10 Academic Math (e.g., modeling linear and quadratic relations) and Grade 11 University/College Preparation Functions (MCR3U). I am also effective with students preparing for standardized tests who need focused review of pre-calculus or algebra principles.
