About Josiah
I've been acting for over 20 years and received my MFA from Yale School of Drama. As an actor I've worked at Manhattan Theatre Club, Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, Geffen Playhouse, Shakespeare Theatre of DC, American Repertory Theatre, and many others. As a teacher, I've taught Yale Summer Session, Williams College, and elsewhere. I was the primary scene study teacher for Brooklyn College's MFA Acting program (the program is currently on pause), and teach intermediate scene study, Shakespeare and Heightened Text, and Script Analysis classes year-round at HB Studio in the West Village.

I help actors from all experience levels develop and strengthen their craft and technique, get out of their heads and into their bodies. My classes and coaching sessions are both rigorous and lighthearted. My in-person scene study and script analysis classes are usually filled with laughter. Curiosity, joy, and play are central to my approach as a teacher.
First and foremost, my approach is centered on each individual student's goals. During our first session we'll discuss where you are in your training and what your goals are for our time working together, and structure our sessions around those goals.
I draw from a mixture of Stanislavsky, Michael Chekhov, clown, applied script analysis, games, Uta Hagen exercises, and much more. For scene study, I teach the plays of Chekhov, Shakespeare and heightened text, and contemporary playwrights. I also offer one-on-one monologue and audition coaching.
Many former clients have booked TV series, Broadway, and off-Broadway plays. But my primary goal is to help people develop a sustainable and positive relationship to learning that they can continue to practice long after we're done working together.
