About Issie

Hi, I’m Issie, currently studying Chemistry at Keele University and the University of Birmingham, alongside working for the North West Ambulance Service. I achieved 9 A*s at GCSE and A*AAA at A Level, and I have been tutoring students for over six years. I particularly enjoy helping students who may initially find science or mathematics difficult, uninteresting or lacking in confidence.

Over the years, I have tutored students across a range of ages and abilities, from GCSE through to A Level, as well as supporting peers during my own studies. I tailor each session to the individual student, whether they need help understanding a particular topic, working through exam questions, preparing for an upcoming assessment or building their confidence more generally.

Alongside my studies and tutoring, my work in the ambulance service has given me the opportunity to apply my scientific knowledge in a practical setting. It has also helped me develop my communication skills when working with a diverse range of people, including recognising verbal and non-verbal cues, providing reassurance and helping people feel at ease. I particularly enjoy finding ways to make scientific concepts relevant to the world around us, whether that is exploring the chemistry behind everyday processes or understanding how scientific knowledge is applied in healthcare.

My tutoring philosophy centres on building understanding and confidence rather than simply memorising information. I want my tutees to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and working through problems at their own pace. My aim is to help them develop the skills and confidence to approach their studies independently and feel more positive about subjects they may previously have struggled with.

Outside of tutoring and work, I enjoy backpacking and camping, spending time with my cats, as well as cycling, playing the piano and cooking. I particularly enjoy experimenting with new recipes and finding the chemistry in everyday life, from the Maillard reaction when cooking to the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medicines in the human body.

Mathematics is the international language that forms the foundation of many subjects, especially the sciences. A strong understanding and proficiency in maths can significantly ease the study of subjects with mathematical components—such as statistical testing in biology, complex multistep calculations in chemistry, and numerous formulae in physics. In our sessions, whether online or in person, we will explore a variety of methods to grasp challenging concepts, from diagrams and videos to tailored revision techniques, always focusing on what works best for you.

Research suggests that 45-minute focused work sessions are optimal for concentration. However, I have set a baseline session length of 1 hour to ensure there is sufficient time for introduction, consolidation, and recap of previous topics without overwhelming the student. Lesson durations can be adjusted to suit individual needs, with fees adjusted on a pro rata basis.

To enhance learning during online sessions, I use a digital drawing pad that uploads directly to our call, screen sharing, a webcam, and a wide selection of online resources. After the session, I will send across any completed notes for the session as a revision material for the student. For in-person sessions, I bring printed materials and any necessary resources to support the lesson. My experience completing A-Levels and University exams has allowed me to discover and apply diverse learning and revision techniques, which I incorporate into each lesson. This helps students find the best consolidation strategies for themselves, making learning both effective and engaging.
