About Rosalind
I am a nature photographer with a lifelong passion for capturing the beauty of birds, flowers, and landscapes. I invite you to embark on a photographic journey where inspiration meets education.
I have watched birds and taken photographs since I was a child. Inspiration started early in childhood from reading Gerald Durrell's animal travelogues, Ernest Shackleton's journal about the Endurance, and Charles Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle. Nature has always been my muse. There is nothing more thrilling than getting up before dawn to capture the morning light on birds and flowers or staying up past midnight to capture the Milky Way and other galaxies in all their glory.
I see photography as the application of physics to art. The essence of photography is the manipulation of light. I am a self-taught photographer who has spent 1000s of hours perfecting my skills. I have taken workshops, read and practiced. The key is practice. My teaching skill comes from teaching high school and college for over 20 years. I am an innovative teacher who loves to come up with multiple ways to teach concepts. We all learn differently.

Capture Your World: Personalized Photography Lessons Just for You!
Are you ready to transform your photography skills and capture the world through your unique lens? Let's embark on a creative journey together, where every lesson is tailored to your personal style and interests.
Start by sharing six of your recent photos—some you're proud of and some you're not. Whether snapped on a phone or a camera, these images will help us understand your current skill level. Together, we'll explore your motivations and preferences with questions like: Why do you want to take photography lessons? What subjects captivate you? Have you ventured beyond automatic settings? Are you familiar with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO?
Your responses and photos guide the creation of a customized learning path. No two students have the same experience! Each lesson builds on the last, with homework assignments that challenge and inspire. We'll review your assignment photos in the next session, adjusting our approach based on your progress. If you excel, we advance; if you need more practice, we find new ways to master the skill.
Editing is a crucial part of digital photography, and you'll learn to organize and enhance your images. You set the pace and choose the focus—whether it's bird photography or another genre, your interests shape your lessons.
I've successfully taught students of all ages. My lessons blend lecture and hands-on activities to ensure success for everyone. With a wealth of teaching experience, I adapt to different learning styles and needs. Students need to be 15 years or older.
Before we begin, consider these questions: Why do you want to learn photography? What subjects do you love to photograph? What equipment do you have or need? How do you learn best? Are there any personal considerations I should be aware of? What's your budget for lessons and equipment?
Ready to capture your world in stunning detail? Contact me at (concealed information) to schedule your first lesson and let's create something extraordinary together!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Rosalind.
Perfect! Rosalind has helped me pick out a camera that best fit my needs but has also patiently taught me all about it and how to edit and improve my photos through Lightroom. She is truly an amazing photographer herself and has the ability to teach students.
Perfect! I have been taking lessons with Rosliand for almost 2years. Each lesson has been very helpful to my photography journey. She is very patient and knowledgeable about photography.
I've enjoyed my experience with Rosalind. I would strongly recommend her if you're looking for a photography tutor.
I've enjoyed each session with Rosalind.Perfect! Rosalind is the kind of photography instructor who makes you understand very quickly that photography is more than simply owning a camera and pressing a button. She is deeply serious about the craft, and that passion comes through in the way she teaches, challenges, and develops her students.
What I appreciated most was how she taught me to actually see a photograph before taking it. She helped me understand framing—not just placing a subject inside the image, but recognizing how lines, space, angles, background, balance, and perspective all work together to tell a story. She taught me to pay attention to what belongs inside the frame just as much as what needs to stay outside of it.
Her lessons on lighting completely changed the way I approach photography. I began to understand how light shapes a face, creates dimension, establishes mood, reveals texture, and can completely transform an ordinary scene. Instead of simply looking for “good lighting,” she taught me how to study the direction, intensity, shadows, highlights, and quality of light and make intentional decisions from there.
Rosalind also gave me a stronger understanding of lenses and how each one creates a different visual experience. I learned that choosing a lens is not simply about how close or far away I am from the subject. Focal length, depth, compression, perspective, aperture, and the environment all contribute to the final story being told through the photograph.
What makes Rosalind especially valuable as an instructor is that she does not allow you to become dependent on automatic settings or luck. She pushes you to understand why an image works. Why this frame? Why this lens? Why this lighting? Why this angle? Those questions helped transform the way I think behind the camera.
She is focused, knowledgeable, observant, and committed to helping her students respect photography as both an art and a technical discipline. Because of her teaching, I now approach my camera with greater intention, confidence, and awareness. I am no longer simply taking pictures—I am learning how to build images.
If you truly want to grow as a photographer and develop your eye, not just learn camera settings, Rosalind is an instructor who will challenge you to take the craft seriously and become more intentional with every frame.Perfect! I was extremely pleased with my first lesson. Rosalind is very personable, professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. I've been afraid of my camera since I got it over a year ago, but after one lesson I'm already feeling empowered and excited to learn more!
- Thank you Deanna. I am so happy to hear that you are already feeling more comfortable with your camera.Rosalind's response :
Perfect! Rosalind is a personable and knowledgeable teacher. She meets students where they are in their photographic journeys. She suggested to me the proper equipment to use and is guiding me in learning how to use the different features of my camera. In addition, I am learning the basics of the art of photography, which is very different from taking snapshots on my phone. I am also learning editing techniques. As I have been growing in knowledge, Rosalind has been expanding opportunities to join others who are also learning from her, so that her students are able to learn from each other. I highly recommend Rosalind's one-on-one style for individualized learning.
- Thank you Diana for your review. I am so glad that my teaching style is helping you achieve your photographic goals.Rosalind's response :
Perfect! Ms. Rosalind Philips is a great instructor and has been extremely helpful in developing my photography. She is very knowledgeable and passionate and has inspired and motivated me to continuously improve my craft. I started working with Ms. Philips almost a year ago and was a novice when it came to the camera. She has helped me understand my own camera and how it functions, the exposure triangle, how to adjust settings, and even to the final edits in Lightroom. She takes you through the whole process while still focusing on what you want to accomplish. Her instruction is hands-on and gives you various activities during and after the lesson. Ms. Philips is very knowledgeable and can offer so much information whether you want to do wildlife, landscape, street, or even rodeo photography. Even my wife, who is very critical, has seen a lot of improvement in my photos. All of this is because of the guidance of Ms. Rosalind Philips. I highly recommend her if you are seeking any instruction or mentoring during your photography journey.
- Thank you Chris. It is special to be called "a great instructor" by another teacher. I'm so glad that your family is able to see the marvelous progress you have made as a photographer.,Rosalind's response :
Perfect! She is always so helpful in keeping our lesson times flexible over Zoom, and accomodating my work schedule. Also, our lessons are custom-made for the speed of my learning, and nothing is ever "set in stone". The lessons evolve organically based on my questions or needs.
- Thank you Kathy. I am happy to be a part of your photography journey.Rosalind's response :
Perfect! I have found Ros to be very knowledgeable as well as personable! She has been very helpful and has met me "where I am" as far as with my abilities and equipment. I appreciate all of her patience and input. The replay option of our lessons has been invaluable for me.
- Thank you so much Kathy. I enjoy working with you and am glad that you find the lesson recordings helpful. I feel strongly that going back and being able to listen to parts of the lesson again is part of what makes the Zoom lessons successful.Rosalind's response :

I started working with Rosalind nearly a year-and-a-half ago as a very novice photographer. She and I share a particular passion for bird photography, which helped forge an immediate bond. I have improved quite a bit since my first lesson, and I can honestly say that I owe it all to her. One of the first things she did was to coach me out of shooting exclusively in auto mode, which introduced me to a whole new world of digital photography! She has been a wonderful teacher and coach, and she's also a genuinely kind person! When I was ready to upgrade my equipment, she helped me identify the features that were most important to me and then to compare and contrast existing options, which was invaluable. She has helped me organize my files, has taught me new editing skills, and much, much more! Over time, photos in my collection that I once gave four or five stars have been revised to three stars or less as my eye and skills have improved! I cannot recommend Rosalind enough!
I’ve been taking photography lessons with Rosalind for 18 months. I was a decent photographer, but Rosalind has taken my skills to a whole new level. She has been able to translate more challenging photography concepts into a language I can understand and put into practice. I did not plan for my lessons to last this long, but she continues to teach me new things to make my photos even better. I strongly recommend her to anyone who wants to improve their photography.

I found Rosalind on line when I began learning about photography. I was rather nervous, both because of the zoom format and because I knew nothing about taking photos. Rosalind has been consistently encouraging. Her corrections always come with instructions on how to improve. By listening and observing what I do, she is able to give me the tools and the encouragement that I need to develop my own style. I also find it very useful when she shares her work and we discuss it.
Since starting with her, my confidence has improved exponentially. She is a Superprof indeed.
Patrizia ZorzoliRosalind Philips is an outstanding nature photographer who appreciates the opportunity to share her knowledge. I have taken around 10 - 15 hours of online classes with Rosalind one on one. She has used a variety of teaching methods, including PowerPoints, hands on with Lightroom software and homework exercises to better understand the camera’s “eye.” During one session with Lightroom, she made a few suggestions on a photo I had taken, and the transformation was stunning.
For students and former students, Rosalind hosts monthly online photo sharing sessions that are generally attended by a handful or more of photographers of varying skill levels. Everyone can comment or make suggestions for improvement on others’ photos. The sessions are informal and very positive, and it is fun and motivational to see what other students are working on.
During photo sharing, Rosalind shares some of her own photos, as well, which are all beautiful. In particular, she has some breathtaking photos of eagles mid-air and some classically framed shots of owls in trees and lone birds on a wire. She shares her settings for the photos and sometimes her editing process, as well, both of which are tremendously helpful.
Rosalind branched out to astro-photography a year or two ago, and has some amazing related captures, including one of an abandoned, graffiti covered school bus with the milky way behind it, which I recently purchased. It was just so cool that I decided to add some edginess to my rec room! Rosalind personally assisted in finding a frame for the photo, which was much appreciated.
So happy I found Rosalind to aid in my photographic journey. I highly recommend her!
I've worked with Rosalind for over a year now. She is a patient and enthusiastic teacher. She excels at meeting the student where they are. She has a wealth of knowledge and can help in all aspects of photography, from helping you select the right equipment to using your camera and the post-shooting work to make your photo sing.
Rosalind is excellent teacher. This wonderful lady could teach anything! I'm so glad my husband found her to give me photography lessons. Rosalind is very knowledgeable about a lot of things, but especially photography. I would recommend her to anyone of any skill. Whether it's something you've never done, or just need to brush up, Rosalind definitely knows her stuff! I LOVE me some Rosalind!!
Ros is very knowledgeable and eager to share her photography. She has helped me to use my iPhone to take amazing pictures and I feel so much more confident taking/sharing my pictures after only one session. She is very patient and encouraging and I am looking forward to my next lesson.
Rosalind is a brilliant educator. Her teaching style is straightforward, informative, structured, enthusiastic and ego-free.
My photography, my editing and my computer knowledge has improved exponentially. She is knowledgeable on many different editing platforms and camera brands. I highly recommend Rosalind as a teacher from beginners to advanced photography and editing.View more recommendations
